update your space…you asked I answered

I’ve received two similar questions recently asking for ideas on how to make a dull space with hand-me-down furniture feel more sophisticated and stylish, by adding accessories.   There are several ways you can add life and energy to a space that does not match your style, personality, or current taste.

I’m going to share ideas that are bold in color, patterned for interest, and make a personality punch.

Address the floor:

An area rug can set the style stage in your room. Make it bold and geometric for added drama and a modern edge.

Update large furniture pieces:

Pillows add an instant facelift. (see post: add a pop with pillows). I am really drawn to the pattern and multi color scheme of this handmade pillow by Olive & Garland on Etsy…

…and the Ikat design pillowcase collection by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard on OpenSky. An Ikat pattern is always classic and interesting.

If your sofa needs a complete change, consider a slipcover by SureFit.

Lighting makes an impact:

Lighting is essential for brightening up a room and adding accents in all the right places. Consider lighting in at least three areas of the space, using floor and table lamps. This lamp from Bungalow5 serves the function you need, but with added color and style.

This crystal floor lamp by Pottery Barn would be a splurge but adds modern detail and has a reflective quality.

Need more lighting? Be creative by adding accent floor lights, shelf lights, and back-lighting.

Simply Savvy Tip: Lighten up the room by choosing reflective materials in your accessories; such as, mirrors, mercury glass candle sticks, and acrylic containers. These all add interest, with no additional weight.

Bold details get noticed:

If you like do-it-yourself projects, painting tables would give them new life. If you are not a diy’er, a decorative tray, stacked books, vase, or a bowl would add attention in the right way. These dramatic and bold accessories are from Jill Rosenwald on Etsy.

Add personality, color, and interest to the room with art. You can be thrifty and creative (see post: creative and cool wall art) or find prints that reflect your style. Group multiple prints together or find one larger image to create interest. Check out this collection of prints by Pixie Pixels on Etsy.

My hope is that these ideas are a launching point for your creativity.  Take the basic premise, go with your feeling, and your space will be one you can be proud of and continue to enhance over time.

Be sure comment, and submit your questions for Savvy Solutions: you asked I answered.

add a pop with pillows

Layering sofas with pillows is a flexible, decorative solution that adds new life to a sofa—and a new accent color to a room.  The more you mix-up patterns and add texture, the warmer the space will feel. You really can’t go wrong, but here are some simple tips:

  • Fear of color- keep colors in similar hues.
  • Neutral and simple- Choose one color to spice up your palette.
  • Budget  savvy-Select pillows that could be used on sofas or chairs in various rooms.
  • Keep like with like- Pair a large floral print with large stripes. Calm it down with solids.
  • Stylize with texture- Choose pintuck, raised stiching, ruffles, embellishments…it all adds interest.
  • Feeling blue- If you like vibrant colors like poppy or citrus, cool it down with shades of blue.

You’ll be surprised how changing pillows in a room changes the overall feeling of the space.Take a look at these design inspirations:

I thought this vintage look I saw at a local clothing store was so much fun. These were custom made; however, you can find styles like this on Etsy.com
